Efeitos de Raça e Heterose na Composição Física da Carcaça e na Qualidade da Carne de Novilhos da Primeira Geração de Cruzamento entre Charolês e Nelore R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Fabiano Nunes; Restle,João; Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Brondani,Ivan Luiz; Bernardes,Régis Augusto Carvalho; Faturi,Cristian.

ESTIMATION OF THE CHARACTERISTIC VALUE OF WOOD STRENGTH REA
Christoforo,André L.; Almeida,Andrea de S.; Lanini,Tamiris L. S.; Nogueira,Rodrigo de S.; Lahr,Francisco A. R..
ABSTRACT For safety reasons, wood strength values, essential for structural dimensioning, are calculated based on the characteristic value, which corresponds to the 5% percentile of a given probability distribution model. For small samples, the Brazilian normative document ABNT NBR 7190 establishes an estimator of the characteristic wood strength, which can provide a significantly different result from the characteristic value coming from a suitable model of probability distribution. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the best probability distribution model (normal, lognormal, Weibull, and exponential) and the subsequent calculation of the characteristic value indicated by ABNT NBR 7190 (1997), allowing to evaluate its accuracy, being also...

Hydrodynamic conditions associated with the formation, maintenance and dissipation of a phytoplankton thin layer in a coastal upwelling system ArchiMer
Velo-suarez, Lourdes; Fernand, Liam; Gentien, Patrick; Reguera, Beatriz.
During May-June 2005, a 17-d cruise was carried out in Ria de Pontevedra (Galician Rias Baixas) to study the physical-biological interactions that may lead to subsurface aggregations of phytoplankton organisms in thin layers (TLs). Physical processes governed the initiation and development, maintenance, and decline of a diatom (toxin producing Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Chaetoceros socialis) TL during an upwelling relaxation-upwelling-downwelling sequence. Differences in shear profiles appeared to lead to the formation of a TL during upwelling events. These results reveal that the coupling between maximum values of shear and buoyancy frequency can shape a subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) into a TL. The effect of shear upon phytoplankton patches, which...

Influence of Through-Thickness Pinning on Composite Shear Properties ArchiMer
Maurin, Romain; Baley, Christophe; Cartie, Denis D. R.; Davies, Peter.
This paper describes results from tests to examine the influence of through-thickness pinning on in-plane shear behaviour, measured by tensile loading of +/- 45A degrees specimens. Samples were produced by both aeronautical and marine manufacturing processes. As few previous studies have investigated pinning of marine composites these were also subjected to out-of-plane shear delamination tests. For both carbon/epoxy laminates the pins reduce the apparent in-plane shear modulus and strength. Pins modify the strain field measured by full-field image analysis, and slow damage development. A new damage mechanism, transverse pin cracking, was observed.

Phytoplankton Orientation in a Turbulent Ocean: A Microscale Perspective ArchiMer
Basterretxea, G.; Font-munoz, Joan Salvador; Tuval, I.
Phytoplankton are by definition autotrophic microorganisms that passively drift with fluid motion. Accordingly, the traditional view of a turbulence-homogenized phytoplankton distribution in the ocean, where cells randomly organize and interact, is deeply rooted in biological oceanography studies. However, increasing understanding of microscopic processes in the ocean is revealing a world of microscale patterns resulting from cell behaviors and fluid-cell interactions that challenges this vision. Autotrophic cells have developed active (i.e., flagella) and passive (i.e., morphological structures and vesicles) motility mechanisms that allow them different degrees of spatial control. Their complex interaction with the ocean physicochemical landscape commonly...

Qualitative characteristics of meat from cull cows of different genotypes and age class slaughter under different finishing systems: a meta-analytic approach Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pacheco,Rangel F.; Mayer,Andrei R.; Vaz,Marcos A.B.; Pötter,Luciana; Cattelam,Jonatas; Callegaro,Álisson M.; Pizzuti,Luiz Angelo D.; Brondani,Ivan L.; Alves Filho,Dari C.; Pacheco,Paulo S..
The aim of this study was to evaluate, by meta-analysis, the quality of the meat of the cows according to genotype, termination system and age class slaughter. During an online research were identified 15 articles with information related to meat quality of slaughtered cows. The data were grouped according of the genotype of cows being: zebu or continental defined, crossed zebu x british or zebu x continental; according to termination system: feedlot or grassland; according to age of slaughter, where: up to 4 years old (young), 4-8 years old (adult) or more than 8 years old (old). The meat of the continental crossbred cows was softer than the other genotypes, both panel of evaluators and by Shear. The meat of cows finished in feedlot showed higher marbling...

Swell dissipation by induced atmospheric shear stress ArchiMer
Perignon, Yves; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Cathelain, M.; Robert, M..
Observations of swell dissipation across oceans reveal a significant loss of energy that can be the result of many of processes. Among these candidate mechanisms, this paper examines the properties of the viscous air-sea boundary layer driven by swells in order to characterize the induced atmospheric flow regime and its associated viscous dissipation over swells. A series of 3-D numerical experiments is carried out with a RANS model and appropriate turbulence closure. These experiments reveal a laminar to turbulent transition in the near free-surface region for a common range of characteristic amplitudes and periods of swells under stationary conditions. At low Reynolds number, laminar conditions prevail and computed decay rates conform to the analytical...

Testing the effectiveness of tough resin systems for improving structural performance of joints in GRP ships. ArchiMer
Norwood, L; Caulier, C.
A major concern in any composite structure is its ability to resist peel and shear loading; this becomes a more difficult problem where long delays in laminating have occurred or when dissimilar materials are joined together. In the case of mine countermeasure vessels, adhesion between stiffener and hull becomes critical when the ship is subjected to underwater shock loading. In order to reduce costs and improve the hull-stiffener bond, tough resin systems based on urethane acrylates have been developed to replace the mechanical crack-stopping system currently employed. This paper describes the benefits of urethane acrylates in the frame-hull application discussing the level of improvement over the mechanical system.
